Things to see and do

The Lost Gardens of Heligan At the end of June each year, Mevagissey celebrates Feast Week with local entertainments and dancing in the streets. During the week there are performances by the renowned Mevagissey Male & Ladies Choir, concerts on the Quay, flower arranging in St Andrews and fish cooking demonstrations.

Mevagissey is a working fishing harbour each year the fishing boats have a race round the bay. The handicapper never gets it right and the fishing boat captains protest and debate the outcome in the pubs of Meva through most of the night.

There is also a raft race, fancy costume obligatory, and there is a huge flour and water fight before the start, where all competitors try to sink their rivals

In addition, the town has a wonderful display of Christmas lights. New Year is celebrated by almost everybody wearing fancy dress, as is the tradition in many Cornish towns and has an excellent atmosphere, perfect for bringing in the New Year.

Mevagissey refers to the town of St Meva and St Issey, first recorded as a hamlet in 1313. A picturesque, unique 14th Century fishing Village (and still is an active fishing harbour today) located on the South Cornwall Coast at the end of a Valley close to the Lost Gardens of Heligan

The gardens, created mainly in the 19th century, of were one of the finest gardens in England of their period, with 57 acres of planted gardens, around 100 acres of ornamental woodlands. The gardens went into to decline and were forgotten for many years, they were eventually re-discovered and restored to their former glory with added attractions. Visitors have flocked to Heligan, and by 1995 it became the most visited private garden in Britain with over 200,000 visitors. It also won the "Country Life" Garden of the Year award 1995. An absolute MUST for everyone visiting Cornwall.

The Eden Project

The Eden Project is a large-scale environmental complex in Cornwall. The project is located in a reclaimed china clay pit, located 1.25 miles (2 km) from the town of St Blazey and 2 miles (4 km) from the larger town of St Austell.
The complex comprises a number of domes that house plant species from around the world, with each emulating a natural biome. Humid tropics Biome, Warm temperature Biome and newly opened educational Biome. A fun visit for all the family .

Both locations offer a superb day out, or more! If you are already interested in gardens then neither will need any introduction. However, there are many thousands of weird and wonderful plants, flowers and aromas to discover. Irrespective of your present knowledge there's something to learn - or you can just relax amongst the sights and smells at your leisure.

Charlestown

The many and varied exhibitions reflect village life in Charlestown, it's history, shipwrecks and the once thriving China Clay industry. The exhibition shows a tremendous range of maritime history dating back to 1715 and one of the largest underwater diving equipment collections in the country, including various suits used for treasure seeking and naval purposes.

They have vast displays of world war losses, shipwrecks and treasures found around the Cornish coastline and further afield. On display you can see cutlery, china, ornaments, military regalia, silver and gold coins and relics from what were then obscure lands. Also Charlestown is a popular site location for many films.
